Useful for drunkenness, being in a drug-induced high, sleep-deprived states, giving in to base-instincts, etc. This word is not limited to consumption or injection of chemical substances; the brain/body naturally produces chemical substances or responds in ways that may (temporarily) alter the mental state. All that matters is that the mental state is in some way abnormal and is directly due to some factor (external or internal); there may be connotations of temporarity and/or inferior functioning.
