definition

x1 is a garden-path word meaning/causing x2 in language x3.

notes

This is a morphologically well-formed word which parses one way right up until the end, at which point it parses another way. The listener or reader of the word realizes after hearing/seeing it that they have been "led down a garden path" (an English idiom meaning something like "to be bamboozled"). There is a corresponding term in linguistics: a "garden-path sentence." Lojban is unusual in having the ability to form garden-path *words* as well as sentences. This word itself is an example. It parses as a lujvo (compound) of purdi 'garden' + pluta 'path' + valsi 'word' + sicni 'coin' + spoja 'explosion' up until about the last syllable. At that point, it ceases to parse as a lujvo and becomes a fu'ivla with a meaning that is totally unclear. See also pudlu'avalsipatlu.
